Govt asks banks to issue mobility enabled cards
July 19, 2023
The government has asked banks to ensure that all new cards and reissue of old cards have the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) as the default option with contactless or near-field function features.
The message sent earlier this month is likely to prompt banks to issue more cards on the RuPay platform, as most NCMC-enabled cards are on the RuPay network.
A senior official confirmed the development and said that the lenders are expected to come equipped with NCMC features including offline wallets for all their cards. Explaining the motive behind the recent directive, he said, “It has been observed that most of the lenders including private and public sector banks are not issuing NCMC cards with NFC functions.” Contactless card is a chip card with an inbuilt radio frequency antenna which allows fixed value transactions without entering PIN details. NCMC Card works as both a Debit Card and Wallet. It is mainly used for travel in metros and on other transport systems. It can also be used for retail and online payments.
In its letter to banks, the government has said that in order to promote one card across all payment systems across the country and facilitate small digital daily payments, it is necessary that contactless cards are NCMC-compliant.
