Walmart to offer a cryptocurrency and NFTs
January 18, 2022
Walmart clearly doesn’t have any desire to be left out of the crypto rush. CNBC has learned Walmart documented a several trademark applications with the USPTO in late December for selling virtual goods, and in one more recording said it would give a digital money just as NFTs. While the reports don’t necessarily guarantee action, trademark attorney Josh Gerben told CNBC the trademarks were highly detailed Walmart was clearly thinking the way that it would handle digital currencies and products.
In an assertion, a Walmart representative told Engadget the organization was “continuously exploring” how new technologies may influence shopping, and that it “routinely” filed trademarks as a feature of that cycle. Don’t expect the organization to confirm or deny plans at this stage, in other words.
It wouldn’t be weird for Walmart to plunge into cryptocurrency or NFTs. After Facebook changed its name to Meta and signaled its aim to foster metaverses, there has been a rush among major brands to enter the space with currencies, NFTs or both. Adidas, Nike, Gap and other well-known names have begun offering NFTs and indicated aims to create virtual spaces. Walmart might not have any desire to risk missing out if this trend lasts, even if it’s not in a hurry to join early adopters.
