Zoom now has auto generated captions
October 26, 2021
Zoom is following through on its promise to add auto-created closed captions to all free Zoom meetings accounts to make its service more accessible, the organization reported Monday. The captions are just available in English, yet the organization says it plans to expand to other dialects later on.
“It’s important to us that everybody can successfully connect, communicate, and participate using Zoom,” said Theresa Larkin, the organization’s product marketing manager of meetings and chat. “Without the proper accessibility tools, individuals with disabilities face tremendous barriers when utilizing video communication solutions.”
Zoom had recently offered AI-powered live record just for its paid accounts, which drew criticism from accessibility advocates who noticed the omnipresence of Zoom calls during the pandemic left hard of hearing clients with limited options. Without the auto-subtitles, Zoom meeting has hosted to either utilize a third-get-together captioning service or manually add their own captions.
The organization has added more accessibility options over the previous year, including support for screen readers and permitting various recordings to be apparent simultaneously, allowing a sign language interpreter to be visible consistently, in any event, when one more client on the call is speaking.
